Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is, in its simplest translation,
universal life energy. It has also been referred to in other cultures
as light, chi, prana, and spirit. It is the life force that exists
in all things. The practice of Reiki is the art and science of
channeling this universal life energy to promote spiritual, mental,
and physical well-being. Reiki is not associated with any particular
religion and can be used alongside any spiritual system.
As Reiki involves directing the natural flow of universal
energy, it can best be likened to recharging a battery. When a battery's
energy supply is low, it doesn't function well. By introducing a charge
to it, it can once again run on its own. Reiki works much the same way.
If you are suffering from an illness (physical, mental, or spiritual),
your energy supply is lessened, Reiki works to assist you in bringing
your energy level back up to its natural flow, thereby enhancing your
own natural healing powers. Reiki practitioners do not suffer from
energy depletion, as they are trained to channel energy from the
outside environment, not from their personal supply.
There are many "schools" of Reiki but the basic principles Reiki practitioners try to abide by
are pretty much universal. Here's a loose translation:
In order to learn Reiki, an attunement is done by a Reiki master. This opens you up to the Reiki energy and connects you forever to the Divine Reiki Source. Attunements are done at three levels of Reiki. The Attunement is permanant and cannot be lost or taken away. Reiki is generally divided into three degrees (although there are some styles that use four and a few styles that use as many as seven).
I'm a second degree Reiki healer, trained to perform both hands-on
healing and distance healing. I especially enjoy working with cats.
Reiki works just as well with animals &
plants as it does with people and in my experience cats
are especially sensitive to Reiki energy.
In my online forum, the
Circle of Healing Purrs, I perform distance healing for cats, along
with a loosely connected group of "guest healers" that stop in whenever they can.
There is absolutely no charge for this service; we are all happy to do it.
As in life generally, but especially in Reiki, "what goes around comes around"
and the Reiki healer often gains as much from sending Reiki as does the recipient.
Objects can also be infused with Reiki.
I'm a jewelry maker and I can feel the
transfer of energy as I form gemstone beads and sterling silver wire
and charms into earrings and necklaces.
And I've met many Reiki healers
who experience similar feelings while sewing, cooking, gardening,
writing, or
doing any kind of hands on work.
Reiki is truly a gift that keeps on giving :-)

The best book on Reiki that I've read is
The Reiki Sourcebook by Bronwen & Frans Stiene.
The authors' research is impeccable and their information unbiased and clearly presented.
There's a detailed history of Reiki and its offshoots and
step by step instructions on performing both Japanese and Western techniques.
Whether you're new to Reiki or
an experienced Master healer, this book is an invaluable resource.
A controversial but fascinating book is
Reiki The Ultimate Guide Learn Sacred Symbols & Attunements
plus Reiki Secrets You Should Know
by Steve Murray.
Steve is an Usui Reiki Master, Tibetan and Karuna Reiki Master who believes that attunements can be
passed equally effectively from teacher to student in person or via the phone, the internet or a DVD or video recording.
He has said,
"Some Reiki Masters believe they can only pass Reiki Attunements in person and maybe they are correct for themselves, but I have passed many thousands of Reiki Attunements with my programs to people around the world successfully. And many other Reiki Masters are also passing attunements in similar ways.
In the Reiki Video and DVD Attunements, I incorporate all the important universal and metaphysical laws to make sure you will receive the Attunements. I use the Hermetic Law of Similarity and my powerful intent while I am channeling Reiki energy, and Reiki symbols to one of my large healing crystals. The crystal will represent you in the now. I use Tibetan, Usui and Karuna Reiki symbols, as well as the long distance healing symbols, which transcend time and space to reach you in the now. I also use a natural, powerful location for the Attunements. The Vortex, Bell Rock in Sedona AZ or next to the Pacific Ocean.
With your mind open, combined with my very powerful intent you will receive the Attunement. Again, your reality is in the now. Everything is in the now. You will receive the Reiki Attunements in the now. The Videos and DVDS serve as a link and portal between us. There are many thousands of people who are now Healers because of these Attunements.
