John Lennon with Cynthia & Julian
John Lennon met Cynthia Powell in art school. They married on August 23, 1962 and their
son Julian was born April 8, 1963.
In those days it wasn't "good press" for a pop star to be married so John and Cynthia's
marriage and baby were kept secret for as long as possible. When the news slipped out
near the end of 1963, most of the fans were fine with Cyn and Julian and
one of The Beatles being a married man and father.
(There were three more bachelors Beatles for the fans to choose from after all ;-)
"Postman, postman, don't be slow, I'm in love with Cyn so go, man, go."-

John and Julian in the mid 1960s... Julian Lennon all grown up
Unfortunately for their marriage, extensive touring didn't allow John much time
with Cynthia and Julian. When he did come home for a bit, he spent most of his days and nights catching up on sleep.
When The Beatles came off the road for good in 1966, John's experiments with drugs
widened the gap between the Beatle and his wife. Later that year he met Yoko Ono.
"There was nothing basically wrong with my marriage to Cyn.
It was just like an amber light. It wasn't on go and it wasn't on stop.
I suppose that me being away so much during the early years of our marriage,
I never did feel like the average married man." ~ John Lennon
"...Divorce is never easy, but I understood. (John) found his soul mate (Yoko Ono)" ~ Cynthia Lennon
John the new biography of John Lennon by Cynthia Lennon
"The time has come when I feel ready to tell the truth about John and me, our years together and the years since his death. There is so much that I have never said, so many incidents I have never spoken of and so many feelings I have never expressed: great love on one hand; pain, torment and humiliation on the other. Only I know what really happened between us, why we stayed together, why we parted and the price I have paid for being John’s wife.
I want to tell the real story of the real John—the infuriating, lovable, sometimes cruel,
funny, talented and needy man who made such an impact on the world.
John believed in the truth and he would want nothing less." ~ Cynthia Lennon
Cynthia was born in Blackpool, England, in 1939. While attending the Liverpool College
of Art she met John Lennon, whose rebellious style, caustic wit and passion for rock and roll
already marked him as someone different. John and Cynthia married in 1962 and
their son, Julian, was born in 1963. The Lennons were divorced in 1969.
Cynthia retained custody of Julian, who saw his father sporadically until John was killed in 1980.
